Accessing healthcare over Easter: what patients need to know

Patients living in East Leicestershire and Rutland are being advised where they can access healthcare over the Easter period.

For all non-emergencies, patients should call NHS 111, where they will be directed to the most appropriate healthcare service based on their symptoms. Calls to NHS 111 are free and the service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

GP practices

GP practices in East Leicestershire and Rutland will close over Easter for four days from Good Friday (March 30) through to Easter Monday (April 2). They will reopen and operate normal hours from Tuesday 3 April onwards.

Urgent Care Centres

Urgent Care Centres are open over Easter for minor illnesses and injuries when GP practices are closed. Walk in services are available from 9am to 7pm on weekends and bank holidays at Melton Mowbray Urgent Care Centre, Rutland Memorial Hospital in Oakham, St Luke’s Treatment Centre in Market Harborough and at Oadby Walk In Centre from 8am to 9pm on weekends and bank holidays. Appointments are also available at these locations by calling NHS 111.

Out of Hours GP services

Out of Hours GP Services are also available at weekends at both Feilding Palmer Hospital in Lutterworth and Rutland Memorial Hospital in Oakham. Appointments for this service can be made by calling NHS 111. Emergency Overnight GP Services are also available by calling NHS 111.

Pharmacies

Patients are also being reminded that pharmacies can offer a range of advice and expertise on common problems, such as coughs, colds, aches and pains, as well as healthy eating and stopping smoking. Self care

The NHS Choices website also offers up-to-date information on a range of illnesses and complaints enabling patients to use self-care.

Emergency Department

Patients should only visit their local Emergency Department in cases of emergency, such as loss of consciousness, fits that are not stopping, severe chest pain, breathing difficulties or severe injuries such as severe bleeding, severe burns or scalds, and severe allergic reactions.

Dr Andy Ker, Clinical Vice-Chair at East Leicestershire and Rutland Clinical Commissioning Group said: “We want patients to know that if they need medical help over the Easter period, there are medical services which are open, even though their GP practice may be closed. We’d encourage people to call NHS 111 for non-emergencies, where you’ll be directed to the most appropriate care that’s closest to you.”
