Patient Groups

Patient Groups

We want more patients to get involved and help improve the delivery of health services, as well as make a difference to their local community.

Patients are encouraged to have a say on how their local GP surgery is run by joining its Patient Participation Group, also known as a PPG. Some GP surgeries have Patient Reference Groups, known as PRGs.

PPG/PRGs are made up of volunteers interested in healthcare issues and can also include members of practice staff. They meet regularly to decide ways and means of making a positive contribution to the services and facilities offered by the surgery to its patients.

They also encourage improved communication between the practice and its patients and provide support for the practice, helping it to implement changes.

As a CCG we work closely with our practices to support their PPG/PRGs and help them to set up groups if they don’t already have one.

We also organise regular meetings which allow the representatives of all the PPG/PRGs in East Leicestershire and Rutland to meet up, network and discuss ideas and share best practice. These meetings allow the CCG to update patients on healthcare services in the area and also get the views and experiences of the members of the Network and the patients they represent.

Each PPG/PRG is invited to provide at least one representative to be a member of the network. As with our GP practices, the groups are part of the three localities in East Leicestershire and Rutland:

The Network meets four times a year – twice as a whole ELR network and twice in the locality groups.

The Network events are held in March and September and locality meetings in December and June.

What our PPG/PRGs get up to

PPG/PRGs also help promote healthcare in their communities. Below is a summary of how the Kibworth Health Centre’s PPG became involved with the planning application for the new health centre. You can also read about the Health Awareness Week organised at Wigston Central Surgery earlier this year.
