COVID-19 booster vaccine update

All adults in England can now receive the Covid-19 booster following the Governments acceleration of the booster programme, due to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant.

In response, the local NHS has stepped up its booster programme with extra pop-up sites in conventional locations and local health leaders are urging people to get vaccinated to give themselves the best protection against the Omicron strain.

Join the NHS COVID-19 vaccine team

This week Dr Caroline Trevithick, Executive Director of Nursing, Quality and Performance at the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland CCGs urged volunteers to join the booster drive.

Dr Trevithick said: “The rapid response from our vaccination teams made up of GPs, nurses, pharmacists, volunteers and now military personnel has been tremendous, but we need as many people as possible to play their part by volunteering their time to help.

“If you would like to work alongside our brilliant team to deliver vaccines and save lives, please come forward to volunteer. No task is too small to contribute to our efforts against the pandemic – we need to increase our capacity to unprecedented levels, to protect our local population quickly.”

People interested in either a voluntary or paid role are urged to visit the Join the NHS COVID-19 vaccine team page. People who volunteered or were trained for paid roles previously are also being contacted to help out again.

Covid-19 restrictions

As cases of the Omicron variant rise quickly, measures have been put in place nationally to help slow the spread of the virus.

It is now compulsory to wear a face covering in most indoor venues, including hairdressers, and on public transport, unless individuals are exempt from doing so. People are asked to work from home if they can, and negative lateral flow tests will be needed to enter nightclubs, stadiums, and large events, except for those who are double vaccinated.

People are also being advised to limit contact with people from other households, ahead of Christmas, to reduce their chances on catching Covid-19.

Local NHS marks 1st anniversary of successful Covid vaccination programme

This Monday (13th December) the local NHS marked the 1st anniversary of the Covid-19 vaccination programme in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland (LLR).

The first person to be vaccinated against the virus in LLR received the life-saving vaccine on 12 December 2020, at the Leicester General Hospital. A year on, nearly 2 million Covid vaccines have been given to people in LLR, saving countless lives and reducing pressure on the NHS.

Andy Williams, Chief Executive of the LLR CCGs, Richard Mitchell, Chief Executive of University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and Angela Hillery, Chief Executive of Leicestershire Partnership Trust took the opportunity to thank NHS staff. To read their message visit https://www.leicestercityccg.nhs.uk/news/ccg-news/local-nhs-marks-1st-anniversary-of-successful-covid-vaccination-programme/.

Anniversary cakes were also delivered to staff across the 27 vaccination sites in LLR, as a small gesture for their selflessness, humility and dedication over the past year.

From administering the vaccine, greeting and directing patients, overseeing the logistical challenge, performing any of the other countless vital roles, or simply taking on additional responsibilities to allow others to focus on the delivery of the programme, NHS staff continue to be key to the vaccination programme.

The Covid-19 vaccination programme is the largest in British history and was established at unprecedented speed thanks to effective partnership working across the local health system.
