Winter conditions can be seriously bad for our health, especially people aged 65 and over and people with long-term health conditions. We want to help protect you and those you care for.
Winter health advice
Cold weather doesn’t have to go hand in hand with illness. Here are some simple things you can do to help stay well this winter:
- Get your flu vaccination – The single most important thing you can do is book your flu vaccination. If you are eligible for a free vaccination and haven’t had yours yet, contact your GP practice to book one. If you are not eligible you can pay for a flu jab at your local pharmacy.
- Make an appointment with your GP – If you can’t treat your illness yourself then your GP can help. Most practices in Leicestershire and Rutland now offer online booking which can be quicker. Practice nurses are also able to treat and advise on many conditions and will often be able to see you quicker.
- Use your urgent care centres – There are four urgent care centres in East Leicestershire and Rutland. These are open evenings, weekends and bank holidays for when your condition is urgent and you can’t wait for your GP practice to open. Appointments are walk-in or you can contact NHS 111.
- Keep warm and look after your health – Heat your home to at least 18°C (or 65°F) if you can. Sometimes illness can get worse quickly when it’s cold and you may already be under the weather. If you feel unwell seek help as soon as possible. Stock up on food and medicines so you don’t have to go out when it is icy underfoot. If you are not sure which medicines you need, speak to your pharmacist.
- Not sure what to do? – If you need to see someone urgently but it is not life-threatening, ring NHS 111. You’ll speak to a highly trained call adviser who will assess your condition and, if necessary, transfer you to a clinician.
